Aviation in Monterey Bay plays a vital role in the region’s connectivity, economy, and history. The Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) serves as the area’s primary hub, offering commercial flights to major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, and Phoenix.
The nearby Naval Postgraduate School and the Defense Language Institute attract military-related aviation activity, while the surrounding airspace is used for training and research. General aviation is also prominent, with private pilots and charter services utilizing MRY and other smaller airfields in the region, such as Watsonville, Salinas and Marina. The Monterey airport is known for its scenic approach, with aircraft descending over the bay and rugged coastline.
Aviation contributes significantly to tourism, business travel, and emergency services in the Monterey Bay area. Local aviation events, flight schools, and museums also help foster interest in aerospace and flight among residents and visitors alike.
